ACUPUNCTURE AWARENESS WEEK:    March 8th – 12th 2017
Acupuncture Awareness Week (AAW), supported by the British Acupuncture Council, aims to help better inform people about the practice of traditional acupuncture. With 2.3 million acupuncture treatments carried out each year, acupuncture is one of the most popular complementary therapies practised in the UK today. Yet many people only discover acupuncture as a last resort, despite its widely recognised health benefits. During this special week focusing on traditional acupuncture, look out for lots of media coverage on this fascinating subject. This special week aims to raise awareness and understanding around acupuncture, and give prospective patients all the information they need about treatment and what to expect.

SPECIAL NEW YEAR’S MESSAGE
Not being on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media site, I am not in the habit of ‘sharing’ information with the world at large. However, on this occasion, I was so surprised and humbled to receive the following New Year’s card from Mr Xiao, a retired Chinese headmaster, whom I treated when he was over here in East Sussex visiting his daughter and son-in-law (both patients), that I  thought patients might like to see and read what he said. I have taken a photo of his original message in Chinese, and if the translation is fairly accurate, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Xiao, for his kind words and thoughts, which I am sure I do not deserve …

The translation is as follows …

Dear Mr Philip,
We wish you a well and Happy Chinese New Year …
Your medical morals are noble,
Your service to your patients considerable,
In your presence, there is an aroma of orchids (orchids represent noble character)
Your art of healing is quite brilliant,
While you continue to strive for perfection,
Your patients applaud you, and your magic healing hands,
As a skilled man, who brings back the Spring …

ACUPUNCTURE AWARENESS WEEK:    March 7th – 13th 2016
Acupuncture Awareness Week (AAW), supported by the British Acupuncture Council, aims to help better inform people about the practice of traditional acupuncture. With 2.3 million acupuncture treatments carried out each year, acupuncture is one of the most popular complementary therapies practised in the UK today. Yet many people only discover acupuncture as a last resort, despite its widely recognised health benefits. During this special week focusing on traditional acupuncture, look out for lots of media coverage on this fascinating subject. The theme of this years AAW is SPORTS, which covers several different areas such as musculoskeletal injuries and performance.  Our celebrity ambassador this year is Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington, who won two gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, in the 400-metre freestyle and 800-metre freestyle swimming events.

BACK TO SCHOOL!
Being a member of the British Acupuncture Council, I am required to undertake 30 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) each year. This enables me to keep up to date with new developments in the world of acupuncture, as well as to revisit older, existing themes. Normally I just go to these lectures and seminars as a matter of course, such as a day’s lecture with the London Neuro-Surgery Partnership, where leading neuro-surgeons will discuss cutting edge techniques. (No pun intended!)

However, I would just like to share with you all, my absolute delight at attending a recent, two-day seminar/lecture, and meeting up with one of my original teachers of Oriental Medicine, the distinguished author, lecturer, and a founder-member of the European School of Acupuncture, Elizabeth Rochat de la Vallee. It was some 30 years ago when I first met and studied acupuncture with Elizabeth, and (the late) Father Claude Larre s.j. at The International College of Oriental Medicine. Their lectures, under the auspices of the Ricci Institute, Paris, would mesmerise us students with their knowledge and expertise of Oriental philosophy and medicine. Both distinguished sinologists, they simply made studying from the Chinese classics, which could easily be an arduous undertaking, into a delightful journey back in time, to study the minds and methods of those early pioneers of this time-honoured subject.

As part of my graduation process, I had to write a 25,000  word thesis, to gain my Bachelor of Acupuncture degree. The subject I chose was ‘A Philosophical Review of Qi’. As part of my research, I identified over 80 different types of Qi (universal life-force energy), and it was Elizabeth who checked the accuracy of my findings. Thank you so much Elizabeth, for a fascinating weekend, re-visiting the importance of the Wu Xing: Five Elements and SI SHI: Four Seasons, Time and Synchronicity. Simply wonderful!

MAGAZINE ARTICLE
Philip has appeared in a five-page feature in the January 2015 issue of the international martial arts magazine, Martial Arts Illustrated. As well as being featured on the front cover of the magazine, the article focuses on Philip’s 50th Anniversary of studying, training, and for the past 40 years, teaching the traditional Oriental martial arts. The article covers Philip’s 50-year martial art journey, from being viciously attacked as a 15 year-old, enrolling in a martial arts club, becoming a teacher of the martial arts and opening a school, studying in South Korea, USA and Europe, being awarded a master’s degree, being inducted into the Martial Arts ‘Hall of Fame’, to finally being awarded his 8th Degree Black Belt in 2014 – one of only two European Instructors to achieve this rank. It is hoped in the coming months to be able to reproduce the article somewhere on the website, for those who may be interested to read it.

NOVEMBER 2014 ……….

MAGAZINE ARTICLE
Philip has appeared in a two-page feature in the autumn 2014 edition of the British Acupuncture Council’s ACU. magazine. The article focuses on Philip’s 50th Anniversary of studying and training in the traditional Oriental martial arts, and looks at how the practice of the Oriental martial arts has helped to shape Philip’s practice of Oriental medicine, and in particular, the practice of acupuncture. In Philip’s 50 years of involvement with Oriental martial arts, and 30 years involvement with Oriental medicine, having helped many students in both disciplines achieve their ambitions of either becoming martial arts instructors, or acupuncture practitioners, it is all the more fitting that the article appears under the heading of ‘Inspiration’, in the magazine. It is hoped in the coming months, to be able to reproduce the article somewhere on the website, for those who may be interested to read it.

SUCCESS STORIES A-Z
Following my request to patients for feedback concerning their acupuncture treatment, I am very pleased to report that several have replied with positive comments detailing their experiences. In fact, so many patients replied, that I decided to organise their responses into an A-Z of conditions. These responses can be found under the Success Stories A-Z Page of the website, and where Back Pain is concerned, under the website’s Acupuncture Back Pain Clinic Page.

Although the Success Stories A-Z which have been posted on the website all generally report positive outcomes, it must be remembered that there are occasions when sadly, acupuncture may not be so successful in helping to alleviate a particular patient’s condition …
